End-of-the-Year Gayo Festivals

December 24, 2008

It’s the end of the year (almost), so we’re getting lots of interesting music festivals from channels like MBC, KBS, and SBS.

So far, I can find the most information on SBS’s show that airs on December 29th.

SBS’s Gayo Daejeon Festival is going to be explosive, and I am going to do by best to watch the entire thing (or at least the interesting parts 😉 ) and comment on it. One thing I particularly love is the overuse of Big Bang. Really, is that necessary? Maybe not, but I am all over it.

And who wants to bet we’re getting something shocking? Can SBS really be outdone by Mnet’s TOP/Hyori kiss? I guess we’ll find out.

So let’s talk about what’s planned, Big Bang-related or otherwise.

Big Bang and Dong Bang Shin Ki are going to come together for something called “Star Wars.” Har har, this is isn’t something set in a galaxy far away. It’s literally (or… wait…) a war of stars; if you haven’t noticed yet, BB and DBSK are two of the most popular male idol groups in Korea, and (unfortunately) fans can’t get enough of pitting them against each other. Hopefully, this performance will settle things once and for all… by having a completely neutral ending. Which is expected, but you know that each respective fanclub will obviously see only the strengths in their group, and the weaknesses in the opposing group. Ah, such is life. Isn’t fandom great? Watch the promo here (I am assuming Daesung is missing because he’s recording Family Outing).

You can expect the following from this collab: Taeyang and Junsu will have a piano battle (with singing? the news is mixed). And… who knows what else. But we know it will be the fluffiest war of pretty boys (although this fact is disputed) ever. And I will love every minute of it.

As I mentioned before, Seungri is going to be performing “Strong Baby,” and this show is where he’s going to do it. Is there any more to say about this? Well, I just know that this is going to be exciting. If Taeyang’s solo performances are any indication of how this solo peformance will go, I’m sure there will be moments in which Seungri’s vigorous dancing will force him to let the backtrack take over. But hopefully, like Taeyang’s fabulous solo dances, the moves will be enough to make up for this.

Just like last year, SBS is marking this end-of-the-year event with a “music drama.” The 2007 music drama featured “WonderBang,” and this year is similar… but it’s a new spin. We still have Big Bang paired with a girl group, but the 2008 music drama will feature Big Bang’s magnae’s, Seungri and Daesung, with So Nyuh Shi Dae’s Taeyeon and Yuri. The theme? Seungri and Daesung fight for Taeyeon’s heart (through cake baking, apparently) while Yuri wallows in her one-sided love. Last year’s “drama” was pretty interesting, with lots of guest appearances by other music artists (Alex, HaHa, and Dynamic Duo were just a few). Hopefully we’ll get the same this year! And we’ll get to hear all the hits of the year together. Can’t wait.

Another cool feature of SBS’s Gayo Daejeon Festival is something called “Rain and Lee Hyori’s Tango Scandal.” This performance supposedly plays off a rumor that Rain and Hyori got “together” a few years back. It is a pretty hyped performance, so hopefully it will live up to all it’s promised to be. Apparently they did the same type of performance back in 2003. See this year’s promo here.

We also (reportedly) get a dance battle between “top” idol groups. I don’t know what this means, but it sounds fun.

BoA is also showing up, surprisingly. She’s coming all the way from the United States. She is supposed to be performing her English single, “Eat You Up,” along with “Look Who’s Talking.” This is all I’ve heard about the matter, but what do you want to bet that this isn’t all we get from BoA? Come on! It’s BoA! Maybe they don’t want to wear her out or overuse her… oh wait, this Korea. Land of collapsing stars. Nvrmnd ^^;; (haha, I’m only teasing, by the way)

Finally, Lee Hyori and Son Dambi are having a dance battle–“U-Go-Girl” vs. “Crazy.”

Here is the list of attendees, which is subject to change:

2AM, 2PM, Big Bang, BoA, Brown Eyed Girls, Dynamic Duo, Eun Ji Won, FT Island, Jewelry, KARA, Kim Jong Kook, Lee Hyori, Rain, Seo Taiji, SG Wannabe, SHINee, Son Dambi, So Nyuh Shi Dae, Super Junior-H, Wonder Girls…

To add to all this excitement, Family Outing Members Lee Hyori, Lee Chun Hee, and Park Yejin are MCing 😀

KBS airs it’s Gayo Festival on the 30th. So far, there isn’t much information on it other than that Lee Hyori and Son Dambi with reprise their “U-Go-Girl” vs. “Crazy” dance battle. Poor KBS… getting already-seen performances? Also, Daesung and Kim Jong Gook will have a special stage of the movie Mama Mia. Looking forward to that!

MBC’s Gayo Festival airs on the 31st.

Rain and Park Jin Young (JYP) are going to have a dance battle. Ooh, interesting. Honestly, the master and the former student.

And what do you know? MBC has the short straw in getting Hyori and Son Dambi doing their dance battle for the third time. Wow. I’m sure they’ll be even better by then though? Who knows lol.

So far, SBS is definitely winning, if there is anything to win.

Who else is actually pretty excited that the year is ending now? I usually feel a little sad and sentimental, but heck… this is awesome.

Thanks to Kbites, ALLKPOP, and SeoulBeats for a lot of the info.
