Featured song: K’s ‘Only Human’

May 29, 2009

I’m midway through the J-drama 1 Litre of Tears, and I’m really liking it. I will give you a full review (of course!) when I’m done with it now, but I am so loving the ending song that I had to share it.

As most of you know, I’m more into K-pop than J, but there is so much good J-music out there. I think part of me is just too lazy to devote equal time to both countries haha. But really, you have to know that I like this song a lot to bring it up. Ironically, the artist is Korean–who goes by the name of “K”–who has made his career in Japan. No matter his nationality, he sings like an absolute angel.

The title of the song is “Only Human.” It’s perfectly appropriate for a drama that reveals a lot about humans; no matter what, we want to love and be loved, do our best, and happily exist. Despite our aspirations, so much of life is colored by pain and hardship. This song, like the drama, gives you some kind of glimpse into these emotions. Even the music of “Only Human” reflects this: it begins without any music at all, with the music filtering in and in until it overwhelms you.

Here are some of the (translated) lines from the song that struck me (although all of the lyrics are gorgeous):

If I could have even seen what tomorrow would be like, I wouldn’t have been able to breathe
So now I move forward
In order to go against the current, like a boat

It’s said that happiness waits
In places that have been consumed by sadness
I’m still searching for
A sunflower at the end of the season

….

If a rain cloud bursts
Then the wet road will sparkle
That’s what the darkness tells me
The strong, strong light
I’ll move forward, and be strong

Anyway, I just wanted to share this song. You don’t have to see the drama to get it.
