English cover of G-Dragon’s ‘Heartbreaker’

September 27, 2009

Fans are known for doing both covers and other-language remakes of their favorite Kpop songs; it’s not that unusual. There are, of course, the good and bad among these. However, once in a while there is a stand-out performance that people just love. Some past favorites of mine include Pumashock‘s unique remakes in Korean, and Aozorafantasii’s acoustic English remake/response to SHINee’s “Noona is So Pretty (Replay).”

I can now happily add to this list DJ Relic’s English version of G-Dragon’s “Heartbreaker.” This cover is fantastic! DJ Relic does the whole song, front to back, in English. The lyrics aren’t awkward or stiff like some English versions are. He has a less stylized voice than GD, but it works for this remake. My only gripe is that the song is lacking the “bite” of the original Korean, but I think this is all due to a matter of language. The emphasis of GD’s falls on the last word of each line, making the vocal pattern sharp. In DJ Relic’s, everything stays on a similar plane. It gives the song less oomph, but I think English songs typically end up this way. I think it’s appropriate for the “new” lyrics.

What do you all think? I can be so skeptical when it comes to these things, but I’m really pleased this time around. Major props to this guy!

Thanks to K Bites for the link.
